THE LAST OF HOMER Poem by ILIAS FOUKIS

THE  LAST  OF  HOMER

Today the season called autumn begins.

As the leaves began to fall
and me an Old Man
my thoughts also began to fall
and I would like to speak this once
to autumn -- about autumn.

It doesnt continue on from here...

I am abandoned, one after the other,
like the World
by the Grand hallucinations of Genesis
the metaphors...
            the allegories...
                        the symbols...

They return to Greece with life
and leave me with death in Troy.

That is why I move along behind them
to see at long last one clean day
bringing thus this Epic to a definitive close
and with Classical diction find a measure of happiness
because Happiness is the Divine Cause
even for its own Beginning.

But Im afraid
that for the Modern critics of the Future
to whom
autumn may arrive
                        as eternal dark
my words about autumn -- to autumn
as if nothing was going on
might then be incorporated into a chapter
of the Iliad or the Odyssey
and thus its better if... I grow still.

    Grandiose...Apologies but it's no Homer.
If however you'd rather I compared it to most of what passes for poetry now; it's excellent. Enough lie to hide to truth but not enough to smother it, unusual to see a poem about poetry that doesn't hook itself to real life. I think I prefer the way you hook it to something more intangible. Hanging metaphors on metaphors almost. A pleasure.

Wow.....This was amazing. I love the slight references to past and future. The way you talk to Autumn as if a person addressing it as a likeness of another being. Alas who am I to say Autumn is not, rather I am naught but a fool for speaking in such layman terms and so thus I bow my hat to both you and Autumn and your wildly reconnaissance conversation.

This poetic trip though your imagination is, thought provoking, descriptive, and creative all rolled up into a beautiful poem. Your words speak in a disciplined voice and supply the catalyst to spark further thought.

Brilliant, Superb! Hear Homer through you the creeps ... wonderful idea to hear him speak one last time ... "an Old Man" Stand Still. But even if Old Stand Still and HE will continue 'to be read and loved I'm sure, at least this and' my great hope.

Genius poetry as a consequence of bilateral symmetry and difference in handedness. Amazing poetry from a really fine poet noticing incredible subtlety on the two sides of human being.
